Background of the Study

Physical activity is essential for the overall health and well-being of students. Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and enhances mental well-being (WHO, 2024). However, sedentary lifestyles, increased screen time, and lack of awareness about the benefits of physical activity have led to rising obesity rates and related health issues among adolescents (Adepoju & Salami, 2024).

In Kaduna State, physical education programs in schools often lack proper implementation, and student participation in exercise activities remains low. There is a growing concern that students are not meeting the recommended daily physical activity levels, which could have long-term health consequences. This study appraises the level of awareness and participation in physical activities among students in Kaduna State, highlighting the factors that influence engagement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite national and global recommendations for increased physical activity among students, many secondary school students in Kaduna State lead inactive lifestyles. Factors such as inadequate sports infrastructure, lack of trained physical education teachers, and insufficient awareness about the benefits of exercise contribute to this problem (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). If left unaddressed, the low level of physical activity among students could increase the risk of lifestyle-related diseases.

This study examines the level of physical activity awareness and participation among students in Kaduna State and identifies strategies for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of physical activity benefits among students in Kaduna State.
  2. To evaluate students’ participation in physical activities.
  3. To identify barriers to active lifestyle adoption among students.

Research Questions

  1. How aware are students of the benefits of physical activity?
  2. What is the level of student participation in physical activities?
  3. What barriers prevent students from engaging in regular exercise?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between physical activity awareness and participation among students.
  2. Student participation in physical activity does not significantly affect health outcomes.
  3. Barriers to physical activity engagement do not significantly impact student participation.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on secondary school students in Kaduna State, evaluating their awareness and participation in physical activities. Limitations include variations in school facilities, student motivation levels, and parental influence on physical activity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Physical Activity: Any bodily movement that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health.
  • Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding of a particular subject, in this case, physical activity.
  • Participation: The degree to which students engage in physical activities, such as sports or exercise programs.
